How often do you clean your makeup brushes and beauty blenders?
Mine get dirty so easily, especially the brushes I use for eyeshadow, foundation and of course my beauty blender. While I try my best to keep them clean I can’t say that I do it often enough.
How often should I clean my makeup brushes?
According to the American Academy of Dermatology we should be cleaning our makeup brushes and beauty blenders every 7-10 days to prevent bacteria buildup, which can lead to breakouts or skin irritation.
The constant buildup from makeup can also ruin the bristles of your makeup brushes overtime. Not ideal, right?
Another thing I’m noticing whenever I use a clean brush to apply my makeup the blending is a lot smoother than if I’m using a brush with product build up on it.
What should I use to clean my brushes?
Today, I’ll walk you though the easiest way to clean your makeup brushes and beauty blenders. It requires only water and a gentle soap. Also a few drops of olive oil will help break down any build up product in the brush and prevent the bristles from drying out.
I usually use this liquid soap because it’s a degreaser and it breaks down makeup easily. However, any gentle soap will do. Another option to try is this Ivory soap or a baby shampoo.
+ If you decide to use a bar soap, instead of liquid soap, wet it beforehand. Stroke the wet bristles in a circular motion around the bar of soap. You will notice the makeup begin to bleed out of the brush.
Do I need anything else?
You don’t need anything else, but if you want to make your life easier, consider this tool.
It’s made out of silicone so it’s easily bendable and you can take it with you if you’re traveling. It also has suction cups on the back, which allows you to stick it to the sink and not worry about things getting messy.
Lastly, it’s very easy to clean, you just run it under warm water and use a few drops of soap to wash it, before you let it air dry.
HOW TO CLEAN YOUR MAKEUP BRUSHES WITH SOAP
- Grab a bowl. Fill it up with lukewarm water and add little bit of soap. Then get your makeup brushes and blenders ready.
+ If you’re adding olive oil to the water. Only use a few drops of oil unless your brushes are very dirty. In that case I’d use 1-2 tsp of oil. - Next, wet the bristles with lukewarm, running water.
- Swirl the brushes in the bowl of water & soap and then in the pal of your hand.
- Repeat step 2 and 3 as many times as needed until there’s no trace of makeup.
- Lastly hold the brush under lukewarm faucet water (only the bristles), ensuring all the soap is out of the bristles.
- Leave it to dry on a paper towel.
After they’re completely dry, run your fingers through the bristles to loose up their shape, and that’s it!
How often do I need to replace my makeup brushes?
Make up brushes should be tossed when they start losing their shape or when their bristles start to shed.
What about my beauty blender?
If you take good care of your beauty blender it can be used for 3-4 months. Try to clean it as often as you clean your brushes, every 7-10 days.
Cleaning your beauty tools frequently is going to prevent product buildup, prevent acne, extend the life of your tools and overall make for a better product application.
