Determining Your Skin Type + Winter Skin Care Tips

Determining your skin type is essential so you can get the most of your skincare routine. Everything from your facial cleanser to your eye cream will be based on your skin type. Keeping that in mind, let’s talk about the four types of skin and the appropriate steps for each one.

DETERMINING YOUR SKIN TYPE

OILY

Do you have enlarged pores? Are you prone to breakouts and blackheads? If so, you have oily skin. Your skin is likely to be shiny, especially from your forehead down your nose and on your chin. This is known as the T-zone. You should try and choose products that are oil-free, both in regards to make-up and beauty products, such as moisturizers, powders, and primers.

BEST OIL FOR OILY SKIN: Grapeseed oil – natural astringent.

NORMAL

Normal skin is also referred to as combination. It’s the most common type. You are likely to have dry cheeks with the odd dry spots here and there. Your T-zone will be slightly oily. This is why it is called combination skin – you are somewhere in between the dry and oily skin type. What this means is that you are going to have access to a broader range of beauty products, treatments, and you should always choose the best supplements for beautiful skin. Something to keep in mind is that you should treat your T-zone differently than the rest of your face by using an astringent once you have washed your face.

BEST OIL FOR NORMAL SKIN: Argan oil -soothing and high in antioxidants.

DRY

Does your skin feel dry and tight? Do you experience red patches? How about flaking and fine wrinkles? If so, you probably have dry skin. In fact, a lot of people develop drier skin the older they get. Choose heavy moisturizers and cleansers. Something that works for me is to carry a hydrating face mist with me at all times.

BEST OIL FOR DRY SKIN: Almond oil – hydrating and gentle.

SENSITIVE

Do you find that your skin is easily irritated? Do you react badly to various beauty products? If so, you probably have sensitive skin. You have to be very careful about the products you use and the treatments you choose. Only pick high-quality ingredients and companies that offer various product lines for different skin solutions.

BEST OIL FOR SENSITIVE SKIN: Aloe vera oil – antibacterial and astringent. It is filled with antioxidants.

All in all, you may go to the best spa in the world or use the most expensive skin products, but if you do not choose the right treatment for your skin type, you won’t reap maximum benefits. That is why determining your skin type is so important.

WINTER SKIN CARE TIPS

Okay, now let’s talk about winter skin care. The cold weather can be quite damaging. So here are a few things we can do.

+ Avoid hot water showers.

Lukewarm water is best. Hot water will strip moisture from your skin, and that’s the last thing you want, especially in the winter when our skin is already lacking moisture due to the weather. The winter is all about hydration, so avoid anything that is going to have the opposite impact.

+ Choose products with care.

Dry skin is a significant issue during the winter period. Therefore, you need to choose your make up, and skin care products wisely. Opt for gentle products – those that do not contain alcohol. In fact, you can purchase products that have been formulated especially made for the colder months. These come highly recommended.

+ Moisturize frequently.

When I feel like my skin is extra dry, I use a water sleeping mask. It works like magic. I put it on after cleansing in the evening, and then I sleep with it. In the morning, I wash it off. Besides, you should always moisturize whenever your skin feels itchy or dry which tends to happen often during the cold months.

+ Get a facial.

Last but not least, get a facial. One of the main benefits is the facial massage which will improve the blood circulation. It also renews skin cells, reduces sagginess and puffiness of the face. Moreover, the beautician will use an array of creams and products to ensure your skin gets all of the nutrients it needs during the cold months.

I can’t stress enough about the importance of looking after your skin during the winter months. After all, who wants dull, dry skin? So, choose your products wisely, moisturize regularly, get a winter facial, avoid hot water, and don’t forget to consider your skin type when determining the best route to go down.
