Most days, I don’t have time to prepare breakfast. I wake up and it’s go-go-go. On those days, I usually have a green smoothie because it’s easy and it takes me less than 5 minutes. You wash everything, put it in a blender and it’s done. It also fills me up and it’s loaded with vitamins, which is a great way to start the day.
My green smoothie recipe has evolved quite a lot over the years. I’ve experimented with lots of different ingredients to see what works for me and what doesn’t. At first, I was only using spinach and banana, blended with some almond milk. However, these days, I add a few extra ingredients that make my smoothie taste better and add a bit more nourishment to my body.
One thing I like to add is hemp seeds for extra potassium, fiber, and protein. They are completely optional and if you don’t like the nutty flavor you can skip them. I personally don’t mind it and quite like it. Sometimes I like to blend my green smoothie and then add the hemp seeds without blending them. It adds a little crunch to my smoothie texture.
Okay, and I have to mention the celery stalks. I never thought of adding celery to my smoothie but it’s a different story now. Especially after I found out that celery is loaded with antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins, such as folate, potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and vitamin K. So definitely try adding a few celery stalks to your green smoothie next time and see how you like it. Start with 1-2 stalks and increase until you can handle the taste. One celery stalk has only 6 calories, so go crazy!
