The Power of a Morning Ritual

August 17, 2018
My morning ritual

I wasn’t always a morning person. It all changed for me with the birth of my daughter. It is no secret to anyone that having kids changes your life. Not in a negative way, just in a different way. Your priorities change.

Before Belle was born, I loved staying late, watching movies, reading books, going out. And now, staying late seems like more of a struggle than anything else.

Ever since I started waking up early, it has made all the difference in the way my day begins. I feel like I have more time to accomplish more.

But another thing that has changed the way my day starts is a morning ritual.

WHAT IS A MORNING RITUAL?

In a few words, a morning ritual is a set of activities that you do every morning. They help you kick your day off to a fresh start.

Morning rituals are unique for every different person. It’s one of those things that you can adjust and adapt to your personal life depending on what works for you.

MY MORNING RITUAL

I started incorporating a morning ritual a couple of months ago, but I wish I started earlier than that.

++ First I changed the alarm sound on my phone. It makes such a big difference. That annoying buzzing and beeping sound is the last thing I want to hear first thing in the morning.

++ Stretch. I do a quick 5-minute stretch while still in bed. It helps to awaken my body and get ready for the day.  One thing I love doing is eye exercises. Have you tried it? Some studies show that eye exercises help with eye strain and overly tired eyes.

If I have time, I will do yoga instead. I will not even wash my face but jump right on the yoga mat which I keep in my bedroom and do a quick 20-30 minute yoga. It is the best!

++ Then I make my bed. Yes, this is part of my morning ritual. I can’t start my day if I haven’t made my bed.

Also if you haven’t listened to this speech “If you want to make a difference in the world, start by making your bed.” by William H. McRaven, do it. It’s an inspiring speech. He says that by making your bed every morning, you start the day with one accomplished task and this will encourage you to do another task, and another, and another.

++ Wash my face. Apply sunscreen. I will wash my face with cold water, and it’s the best way to wake up my skin. Then I dry out my face and apply a moisturizer with high SPF. I do that even if I’m not leaving the house. Then I grab my ice roller and roll it on my face for about 5 minutes.

++ I don’t check my phone until 9-10pm. So I noticed that checking my phone first thing in the morning is the most unproductive thing I can do. I usually wake up to lots of emails, notifications, and messages. Instead of replying to everyone and spend close to an hour first thing in the morning, I will wait until later in the day when I can dedicate the time for all of that.

++ Drink a large glass of water with lemon. Or make this detox drink. I’m not one of those people that drink water during the night, and when I wake up, I feel a little dehydrated. So having a glass of water fixes that.

++ Coffee, tea. Some mornings I will have a glass of peppermint tea, while other mornings I will make a cup of coffee, add a scoop of collagen powder, unsweetened almond milk, and some cinnamon.

++ Read. Reading is probably my favorite part of my morning ritual. I always have a book on my nightstand. Right now I’m reading this book. So I will spend 20-30 minutes reading. I aim for one chapter, but some days, life gets in the way, and I will read less than that. Just do as much as you can.

As I said earlier, a morning ritual is whatever works for you. It can be as simple as making a smoothie in the morning. It can be a set of things.
