Simple Tips for Styling a Coffee Table

Styling a coffee table is one of those small details that can bring a room together. It’s also a fun way to express your personality and make a space feel inviting. Over the years, I’ve found a few simple tricks that help create a functional and visually appealing coffee table look.

1. Start with a Tray

A tray is a great way to anchor your coffee table decor and keep things organized. It acts as a base for smaller items and adds structure to the setup. Look for something neutral, like a wooden or marble tray (similar here), that complements your decor style.

2. Add Layers

Layering is key to creating visual interest. Stack a couple of books (find some here) that reflect your interests or style, and top them with a small decorative object like a candle (this one is lovely) or a vase (similar option here). Varying the heights of your items will make the arrangement feel dynamic.

3. Bring in Natural Elements

A touch of greenery or fresh flowers can make a coffee table feel lively and welcoming. Choose a small plant or a bouquet in a simple vase to add a pop of color and freshness.

4. Keep It Functional

It’s important that your coffee table works for your everyday needs. Leave enough space for essentials, like a remote control holder or a coaster set (this one is nice), so your table remains practical while looking great.

5. Play with Texture

Incorporating different textures can make the setup feel more interesting. Pair smooth materials, like a glass or ceramic vase, with coarser elements, such as a woven basket or a wood tray. Mixing materials creates depth and makes the arrangement feel intentional.

Add life and color to your decor by adding a vase with fresh flowers.

Styling a coffee table doesn’t have to be complicated. With a few thoughtful touches—like a tray, layered books, natural elements, and textures—you can create a look that’s both beautiful and functional. It’s a small way to add personality and charm to your living space.

I love this. Totally book marking it for the future. I know this is crazy, but we don’t have a coffee table! We’ve been using an ottoman, and that so needs to change!
