What do you think about when you hear “rice cakes”? Something bland and not very tasty? You’re not alone. Rice cakes can be bland, but they can also be tasty and easy to prepare. Rice cakes are also a great breakfast option or an afternoon snack. I’m sharing 5 savory rice cake topping ideas I’ve been making at home.
What are rice cakes?
Rice cakes are basically popped or puffed rice, so in a way, they taste like popcorn. They’re low in calories, making them a good base to use when you want a snack. However, keep in mind that rice cakes are pretty much rice and air, so they don’t provide many nutritional benefits on their own. I think what makes them a nutritious snack is when they’re consumed with the right toppings.
Below are a few savory rice cake topping ideas for you to try. These are very satisfying, and I like to switch things up. For example, option #5 tastes great with a boiled egg, but I often prepare it with a scrambled egg instead and sprinkle some Tajin on top.
Speaking of tajin, I’ve been slightly obsessed with the spice and adding it to pretty much anything, especially veggies. If you’re also a fan of tajin, you should try option #3 with hummus, peppers, and some tajin instead of the black sesame seeds. A small change that completely transforms the flavor.
If you have a sweet tooth and you want to try other rice cake topping ideas, check out this post I made a few years ago. I’m sharing some savory and sweet options on there that you can try. I think my favorite is the almond butter and banana rice cake. (link to the post: 5 Delicious Ways To Eat Rice Cakes )
